John was born on November 2nd, 1899 in Workhouse, Bethnal Green, Middlesex.1   John's father was Charles Edward Brackett and his mother was Eliza Frances Mortimer. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Frank, Charles, George, Henry, James, Clara, Louisa, Eliza, Alice, Rose and Violet.  He was the oldest of the twelve children.  He died at the age of 78 in 1977 in Windsor, Buckinghamshire.1
