William was born in 1774 in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire and his christening took place there on October 3rd, 1774.1   William's father was William Avis and his mother was Elizabeth.  His paternal grandparents were Nathanial Avis and Mary Ellyot. He had a brother and two sisters, named Thomas, Hannah and Mary.  He was the second oldest of the four children.
