Mary was born in 1779 in Chalfont St Peter, Buckinghamshire and her christening took place there on December 29th, 1779.1   Mary's father was William Avis and her mother was Elizabeth.  Her paternal grandparents were Nathanial Avis and Mary Ellyot. She had two brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William and Hannah.  She was the youngest of the four children.
