Zalman was born in 1920.  Zalman's father was Hersch Leib Fern and his mother was Chaya Wandner.  His paternal grandparents were Schmil (Samuel) Fern and Chana Feige Lowenthal. He had four brothers and a sister, named Avraham Jakob, Eliyahu, Samuel Zacharias, Josef and Leah.  He was the fifth oldest of the six children.  He died at the age of 22 in 1942.
