Mathew was born in 1771 in Welton East Yorkshire and his baptism took place there on December 23rd, 1771.1   Mathew's father is Robert Garton and his mother is Rebecca Fox.  His maternal grandfather is Thomas Fox. He had five brothers and a sister, named Thomas, William, John, Robert, Thomas and Hannah.  He was the fourth oldest of the seven children.  He died at the age of 19 on January 21st, 1790 in Welton East Yorkshire Age 17 of Smallpox.1
