William was born on July 5th, 1820 at St Peters Buckinghamshire.1  William's father was Joseph (Farmer/Publican) Payne and his mother was Ann. He had four brothers and five sisters, named Charles, John, Thomas, Richard, Sarah, Margaret, Rhoda, Ann and Eliza.  He was the oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 81 on August 24th, 1901 at St Georges in the East.2

William and Margaret were married in a religious ceremony on February 22nd, 1844.  They had six sons and three daughters, named William, William, Charles, James, Margaret, Richard, Mary, Margaret and Rhoda.
