Richard was born on September 24th, 1860 at St Georges in the East. Richard's father was William (of Chalfont St Peters) Payne (Porter/ Drayman) and his mother was Margaret Weedon.  His paternal grandparents were Joseph (Farmer/Publican) Payne and Ann; his maternal grandparents are James      (a Joiner)  Weedon and <Unknown>. He had five brothers and three sisters, named William, William, Charles, James, Margaret, Mary, Margaret and Rhoda.  He was the youngest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 78 on March 12th, 1939.

Richard and Eliza were married in a religious ceremony on December 20th, 1882 in Whitechapel.1   They had two sons and a daughter, named Sidney, George and Beatrice.
