Richard was born in June 1863 in Devonport Devonshire.1  Richard's father was Robert Osborne (Engineer scotsman Aberdeen) and his mother was Elizabeth Catherine (of Chignal) Childs (dressmaker).  His maternal grandparents were Zachariah Childs (Farmer Shoemaker) and Sarah Tyler. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Robert, Arthur, Jessie, Barbara and Catherine.  He was the third oldest of the six children.
