Martha was born about 1852 in Shoreditch.  Martha's father was George Head (Gen Dealer-Green Grocer) and her mother was Ann. She had four brothers and seven sisters, named George, Joseph, James, John, Ann, Eliza, Mary, Louisa, Susan, Emma and Charlotte.  She was the third youngest of the twelve children.
