Harriett was born about November 1869 in Broadway Barking and her christening took place on November 17th, 1869 at St Margaret's  Church Barking.1 2   Harriett's father was John Alexander Hambelton (Sail Maker) and her mother was Mary Hurdis Foster Farley (dressmaker).  Her paternal grandparents were John Alexander Hambelton (Fisherman Smack Owner) and Ann Quash (d Grimsby); her maternal grandparents were Edward Foster Farley (Ag Lab b Lewisham) and Ellen Campion (b Lewisham). She had four brothers and five sisters, named Atholl, Luther, Alexander, William, Alice, Clara, Ellen, Annette and Florence.  She was the second youngest of the ten children.
