Alexander was born on December 12th, 1862 in Barking Essex and his christening took place on March 13th, 1867 at St Margaret's Church Barking.¹ Alexander's father was John Alexander Hambelton (Sail Maker) and his mother was Mary Hurdis Foster Farley (dressmaker). His paternal grandparents were John Alexander Hambelton (Fisherman Smack Owner) and Ann Quash (d Grimsby); his maternal grandparents were Edward Foster Farley (Ag Lab b Lewisham) and Ellen Campion (b Lewisham). He had three brothers and six sisters, named Atholl, Luther, William, Alice, Clara, Ellen, Annette, Florence and Harriett. He was the fifth oldest of the ten children. He died at the age of 66 on April 27th, 1929 at 7 Sinclair Grove Golders Green. The funeral took place in May 1929.²
