Alice was born in 1856 in Barking Essex. Alice's father was John Alexander Hambelton (Sail Maker) and her mother was Mary Hurdis Foster Farley (dressmaker). Her paternal grandparents were John Alexander Hambelton (Fisherman Smack Owner) and Ann Quash (d Grimsby); her maternal grandparents were Edward Foster Farley (Ag Lab b Lewisham) and Ellen Campion (b Lewisham). She had four brothers and five sisters, named Atholl, Luther, Alexander, William, Clara, Ellen, Annette, Florence and Harriett. She was the oldest of the ten children.

General Notes
- Their first daughter was Alice Montrose Hambelton,b 1855, she lived with her
  grandparents, John and Ann on the 1861 census, and on the 1871 census. She
  was then a Nurse at Barts Hospital on 1881 census, and she was the one that
  registered her grandfather Farley's death in 1882. She married Vincent Smith
  a Curate at St Margarets.( see my piece underneath).
  
  The 1881 census, has their name as Hamilton, and John (senior) is living
  with his daughter in law in Fisher Street, and they have some sort of Lodging House, among the lodgers is Vincent Smith, who married Alice
  Hambleton. John died in 1884.
