    John Miller was the grandson of one of Daviess County's original residents.  His father James was born in Kentucky and had moved to Indiana only about twenty years before John was born.  John Miller was the fifth of ten children.
    
    John married for the first time in 1876, a few weeks shy of his twenty-eighth birthday.  His wife, Sarah Wade, was then twenty-five years old.  Like John, she came from settler stock that reached Indiana by way of Kentucky, probably as part of a wave of Catholic migration from Maryland.  Sarah died about a month after the birth of her and John's fourth child, George Lawrence. 
    
    After Sarah's death, John's youngest child, George, was sent to live with Sarah's younger brother Geo and his wife Elizabeth (Padgett), who had no children of their own and lived in Bogard Township, Daviess County.  John remarried.  His second wife's name was Mary Carolyn Padgett.  (It is not clear whether Elizabeth and Mary Carolyn were relatives, but the 1910 census indicates that Padgett was Mary Carolyn's maiden name and not the name of a former husband.)  John and Sarah's other three children remained with their father and Mary Carolyn.  The new couple then had three sons and a daughter of their own.  Their youngest, daughter Annie L., died when she was two-and-a-half years old.
    
    John's second wife, Mary Carolyn, died between 1910 and 1920.  John lived with his son Bernard toward the end of his life.  He died in 1931 and was buried at St. Peter's in Montgomery.
    
    Evansville diocese, Judy Neff:  "John Walker died 5 January 1931 at the age of 83 and was buried 7 January 1931 at St. Peter Cemetery. (Cannot really tell from the death record if this is the same John Walker.)"  Note:  probate record confirms death date.

Bernard Walker, Marion Walker, and Benedict J. Walker.  > 200 acres of land in Daviess Cty, divided among children except for Benedict J.  L. Bernard and his wife Anna M. cared for John Miller for "many weeks" prior to his death and received a special bequest for "care, support and maintenance."Final entry is from 3 Feb 1932, administrator Charles M. Graves (d. 23 Jan 1932), later replaced by L. Bernard Walker, who settled all outstanding accounts; lawyer was F. A. Seal.
