Joseph Walker lived in pre-revolutionary Maryland, in St. Mary's County, where he married Rebecca Davis on January 31, 1803. Joseph and Rebecca had at least three children in Maryland before removing to Kentucky: Joseph Jr., Nancy Ann, and Ignatius.

The Maryland League of 1785 consisted of several dozen Catholic families from St. Mary's who agrred to move west to Kentucky and settle. That process continued until about 1815. By 1808, the Catholic Church had formally opened a diocese at Bardstown, Nelson Cty, Kentucky, then wilderness. Joseph and Rebecca's sons Zachariah and James D. were both born in Kentucky, Zachariah in Mason County. Two other possible sons, whose names we do not know, and a daughter, Mary, were probably born in Kentucky as well.

The family removed to Indiana in 1820, according to son Zachariah's biography. In 1829, Joseph and Rebecca's eldest child, Joseph Jr., married in Daviess County, Indiana. Daviess County was formed in 1817 from Knox County, where the Catholic Church had a mission at Vincennes. In 1835, either Joseph Jr. or Sr. purchased land from the U.S. government office at Vincennes. Joseph Sr. died shortly afterwards, in 1836.

g-grandson Louis Bernard WALKER in 1965: "My great-great-grandfather Joseph Walker came from England either with or shortly after Lord Baltimore [sic] and lived for a time in St. Mary's County, Maryland and lived fora time in Virginia coming from there to Mason County, K[entuck]y near a little town Mays Lick where my grandfather James Daviess Walker was born Aug. 4, 1815. His father Joseph Walker came to Daviess County April 1820 and settled just West of Mount Olive Church in Barr Tp." (courtesy Fran Walker Lichtenberg) (CMB note: As LBW's g-g-grandfather is Joseph d. SMC, MD 1794, he is apparently speaking of his g-grandfather Joseph (1765-1836) who emigrated to KY > 1803.)

dtr Nancy to receive 60 dollars at her mother's death or remarriage; son Zachariah to have four acres square taken from SW corner of "the last forty acres of Land which I entered, the said four acres...not to come north of the State Road" (line missing from photocopy) [Zachariah sells these four acres to Ignatius 3 Jun 1838]..."[wife] Rebecca Walker ... to use as she may think proper, and to take care of and support helpless children, as long as she lives and remains my widow, and at her marriage or death, I will that all my estate both real and personal, with the above exceptions, be equally divided among my children, share and share alike, viz. Joseph Walker, Nancy Walker, Zachariah Walker, Ignatious Walker, James Walker, and Mary Walker."

Joseph Sr. 1765 MD acquired original lands in Daviess Cty, IN on 5 Sep 1835 (see land deed). SW quarter of NE quarter of Section Thirty-Six, in Township Three North of Range Six West, in the District of Lands subject to sale at Vincennes, Indiana containing Forty acres."

In 1830, there are two Joseph WALKER h/holds in Daviess Cty, IN:

1) male-female 10001-00001 (0-5, 5-10, 10-15, 15-20, 20-30, 30-40, 40-50, thus one male 0-5 (John Chrysostom?) and one male 20-30 (head of h/hold Joseph Jr.), plus one female 20-30 (wife Nancy)) Same page includes a Sylvester MATINGLY [sic] (00002-0001) and a John WALKER (0000001-0000001).

Per son Zachariah's political bio, Joseph & family removed to IN in 1820. Joseph's g-grandson Jerome Walker in 1977: "I remember seeing a bill of sale of items that Joseph Walker sold at auction before moving from KY to Indiana. There were two items on it that still stick in my mind. One was the family of three slaves. A man, his wife and a daughter who were not to be separated. The other was 12 fox hounds, all soft-mouthed but two." (courtesy Fran Walker Lichtenberg)

The family removed to IN cca 1820, when stagecoaches down the Old Buffalo Trace began to displace the old system of ferries.

In the 1820 U.S. Census for Kentucky, there are 186 WALKER h/holds. Among them are eight Joseph WALKER h/holds: one in Bardstown Twp, Nelson Cty, KY; three in Adair Cty; one in Bath Cty; one in Hopkinsville (city), Christian Cty; one in Mason Cty; and one in Shelby Cty. Mason Cty's is 001201-22010-0400-0001...9. Columns labeled on 1st pg of roll, thus 1m 45+ (<1775), 2m 18-26 (1794-1802), 1m 16-18 (1802-1804); 1f 26-45, 2f 16-26, 2f 0-16, 4p in agric, 1 (slave?) 45+. (Not a match; Ignatius, James D not here.)

No head of household named Joseph WALKER appears in St. Mary's Cty, MD for 1810 census, but there are two by that name in Bardstown, Nelson Cty, KY that year (see below).
