Robert's father was John Wilson and his mother was Sophia Robertson. His paternal grandparents were John Wilson and Jessie Mcwilliam. He had four brothers and five sisters, named William, James, Alfred, Alistair, Jessie, Maggie, Jane, Johan and Georgina. He was the third youngest of the ten children. He died at the age of 24 in 1932 in Fraserburgh.
