William's father was Peter Turner Sr. and his mother was Mary Russell.  His paternal grandparents were William Turner and Jean Russell; his maternal grandparents were John Russell and Isabella Brownlee. He had three brothers and five sisters, named John, Archibald, Peter, Jean, Mary, Ann, Janet and Agnes.  He was the oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 66 on February 24th, 1880 in Linlithgow.
