John's father was Peter Turner Sr. and his mother was Mary Russell.  His paternal grandparents were William Turner and Jean Russell; his maternal grandparents were John Russell and Isabella Brownlee. He had three brothers and five sisters, named William, Archibald, Peter, Jean, Mary, Ann, Janet and Agnes.  He was the fifth oldest of the nine children.  He died at the age of 72 in 1896 in Dunoon.
