Mary's father was Peter Turner Sr. and her mother was Mary Russell.  Her paternal grandparents were William Turner and Jean Russell; her maternal grandparents were John Russell and Isabella Brownlee. She had four brothers and four sisters, named William, John, Archibald, Peter, Jean, Ann, Janet and Agnes.  She was the third oldest of the nine children.  She died after April 1887.
