John's father was David Stevenson and his mother was Janet Hamilton.  His paternal grandparents were William Stevenson and Margaret Patrick. He had six brothers and four sisters, named William, Robert, Joseph, James, James, David, Elisabeth, Margaret, Jean and Jean. He had a half-brother and two half-sisters, named John, Margaret and Jessie.
