Martha was born in 1879 in New Cumnock.

Martha's father was Hugh Robertson and her mother was Elizabeth Majorrow. Her paternal grandparents were William Robertson and Isabella Finnie. She had three brothers and six sisters, named William, Hugh, James, Margaret, Martha, Isabella, Mary, Ellen and Euphemia. She was the fourth youngest of the ten children. She died in 1879 in New Cumnock.
