Ellen's father was Hugh Robertson and her mother was Elizabeth Majorrow. Her paternal grandparents were William Robertson and Isabella Finnie. She had three brothers and six sisters, named William, Hugh, James, Margaret, Martha, Isabella, Martha, Mary and Euphemia. She was the second youngest of the ten children. She died at the age of 71 in 1956 in Ayr.
