Martha's father was John Cox Robertson and her mother was Janet Wright Gemmell. Her paternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Cox. She had four brothers and a sister, named George, Gavin, James, John and Mary. She was the third oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 82 in 1984 in Paisley.
