James' father was John Cox Robertson and his mother was Janet Wright Gemmell. His paternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Cox. He had three brothers and two sisters, named George, Gavin, John, Mary and Martha. He was the second youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 75 on March 23rd, 1984 in Paisley.
