John's father was William Robertson and his mother was Janet McCulloch. His paternal grandparents were James Robertson and Ann McMurran. He had two brothers and three sisters, named James, William, Janet, Anne and Susan. He was the youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 64 on December 17th, 1930 in New York City.
