George's father was John Robertson and his mother was Agnes Gourlay. His paternal grandparents were George Robertson and Martha Carlton McGloughlane. He had a brother and ten sisters, named William, Jane, Rachel, Martha, Isabella, Martha, Mary, Agnes, Euphemia, Elizabeth and Margaret. He was the fourth youngest of the twelve children. He died at the age of 2 in 1870 in Sorn.
