Robert's father was James Forbes Pollock and his mother was Janet Donald. His maternal grandparents were William Donald and Janet Towers. He had four brothers and three sisters, named James, William, David, Andrew, Janet, Lillias and Agnes. He was the third youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 63 in 1956 in Hamilton.
