John's father was Henry Peat and his mother was Janet Arbuckle. His maternal grandparents were John Arbuckle and Marion Dick. He had a brother and seven sisters, named Thomas, Marion, Mary, Mary, Elsie, Annie, Isabella and Jenny. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 63 in 1938 in Old Monkland.
