Jean's father was David Patrick and her mother was Jean Simson.  Her maternal grandparents were William Simpson and Margaret Balk. She had two brothers and four sisters, named Joseph, David, Margaret, Jean, Janet and Agnes.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
