Hugh's father was Archibald Mclean and his mother was Elizabeth McClatchie. His maternal grandparents were Hugh McLatchie and Agnes Reid. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William, Archibald, Margaret, Agnes, Elizabeth and Elizabeth. He was the third oldest of the seven children.
