Archibald was born in 1845 in Yorkshire.1  Archibald's father was Archibald Mclean and his mother was Elizabeth McClatchie.  His maternal grandparents were Hugh McLatchie and Agnes Reid. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Hugh, William, Margaret, Agnes, Elizabeth and Elizabeth.  He was the youngest of the seven children.
