Margaret's father was John Liddell and her mother was Janet Nicol. Her maternal grandparents were John Nichol and Julian (Julia) Johnston. She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, James, Julia, Janet and Isabella. She was the third youngest of the seven children. She died at the age of 98 in 1984 in Lasswade.
