Janet's father was John Liddell and her mother was Janet Nicol. Her maternal grandparents were John Nichol and Julian (Julia) Johnston. She had three brothers and three sisters, named William, John, James, Julia, Isabella and Margaret. She was the third oldest of the seven children.
