Margaret's father was Archibald Kerr and her mother was Isabella (Bella) Purdon.  Her paternal grandparents were Hugh Kerr and Margaret Anderson. She had four brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, James, Archie, John, Jean, Jeanie and Barbara.  She was the third youngest of the seven children.
