John's father was Archibald Kerr and his mother was Isabella (Bella) Purdon.  His paternal grandparents were Hugh Kerr and Margaret Anderson. He had three brothers and three sisters, named Alexander, James, Archie, Jean, Jeanie, Margaret and Barbara.  He was the second youngest of the seven children.  He died due to a respiratory problem and/or pneumonia, phthisis (tuberculosis), at the age of 46 in 1903 in Paisley.³
