Margaret's father was Robert Johnston and her mother was Ann Dewar. Her paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Ann Hardie Dick. She had three brothers and a sister, named John, James, Robert and Euphemia. She was the third oldest of the five children. She died at the age of 42 in 1928 in Kirkliston.
