John's father was Robert Johnston and his mother was Ann Dewar. His paternal grandparents were John Johnston and Ann Hardie Dick. He had two brothers and two sisters, named James, Robert, Euphemia and Margaret. He was the second oldest of the five children. He died at the age of 78 in 1961 in Kirkliston.
