Andrew's father was John Anderson Hunter and his mother was Mary Sutherland. His paternal grandparents were Andrew Thomson Hunter and Isabella Anderson. He had two sisters named Mary and Isabella. He was the oldest of the three children. He died at the age of 70 in 1946 in Bridgeton.
