Mary's father was William Graham Howie and her mother was Elizabeth McDonald. Her maternal grandparents were William McDonald and Elizabeth Ferguson. She had two brothers and three sisters, named William, James, Elizabeth, Agnes and Agnes. She was the third oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 82 in 1980 in Glasgow.
