Richard's father was Daniel Stewart Hotchkis and his mother was Janet (Jessie) Thompson Henderson. His maternal grandparents were James Henderson and Isabel Walker. He had three brothers and four sisters, named Daniel, James, John, Isabella, Jane, Jessie and Ellen. He was the second oldest of the eight children.
