John's father was Michael Henderson and his mother was Agnes Morrison. His paternal grandparents were Michael Henderson and Margaret Galloway. He had four brothers and four sisters, named Michael, Robert, Michael, James, Barbara, Margaret, Agnes and Helen. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Angus, Alexander, Maggie, Euphemia and Mary.
