Barbara's father was Michael Henderson and her mother was Agnes Morrison. Her paternal grandparents were Michael Henderson and Margaret Galloway. She had five brothers and three sisters, named Michael, John, Robert, Michael, James, Margaret, Agnes and Helen. She was the fourth oldest of the nine children. She had two half-brothers and three half-sisters, named Angus, Alexander, Maggie, Euphemia and Mary.
