Jessie's father was William Henderson and her mother was Isabel Nichol. Her maternal grandparents were John Nichol and Julian (Julia) Johnston. She had six brothers and four sisters, named James, Henderson, John, William, George, Matthew, Julia, Maggie, Isabella and Jeanie. She was the fourth oldest of the eleven children.
