Mary's father was James Rennie Hanning and her mother was Catherine Tumilty. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Nathaniel Hanning and Elshie Rennie. She had three brothers and two sisters, named James, George, James, Elspeth and Annie. She was the oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 2 in 1913 in Anderston.
