James' father was James Rennie Hanning and his mother was Catherine Tumilty. His paternal grandparents were Richard Nathaniel Hanning and Elshie Rennie. He had two brothers and three sisters, named James, George, Mary, Elspeth and Annie. He was the youngest of the six children. He died at the age of 3 in 1927 in Gorbals.
