Elspeth's father was James Rennie Hanning and her mother was Catherine Tumilty. Her paternal grandparents were Richard Nathaniel Hanning and Elshie Rennie. She had three brothers and two sisters, named James, George, James, Mary and Annie. She was the second oldest of the six children. She died at the age of 69 in 1981 in Barrhead.
