James' father was Richard Nathaniel Hanning and his mother was Elshie Rennie. His maternal grandparents were Peter Rennie and Mary Ann Wood. He had three brothers and four sisters, named George, John, Richard, Mary Ann, Elsie, Primrose and Primrose. He was the third youngest of the eight children. He died at the age of 55 in 1939 in Glasgow.
