Mary's father was Alexander Hamilton and her mother was Sara Fraser.  Her maternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson. She had six brothers and three sisters, named John, Alexander, William, Hugh, Thomas, John, Janet, Isabella and Sarah.  She was the second oldest of the ten children.  She died at the age of 54 in 1881 in Illinois.³
