Hugh's father was Alexander Hamilton and his mother was Sara Fraser.  His maternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson. He had five brothers and four sisters, named John, Alexander, William, Thomas, John, Mary, Janet, Isabella and Sarah.  He was the fifth youngest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 37 in 1871 in Dalry.³
