John's father was Alexander Hamilton and his mother was Sara Fraser.  His maternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson. He had five brothers and four sisters, named Alexander, William, Hugh, Thomas, John, Mary, Janet, Isabella and Sarah.  He was the oldest of the ten children.  He died at the age of 11 in 1837 in Patna.
