Janet's father was Alexander Hamilton and her mother was Sara Fraser.  Her maternal grandparents were Alexander Fraser and Isabella Adamson. She had six brothers and three sisters, named John, Alexander, William, Hugh, Thomas, John, Mary, Isabella and Sarah.  She was the fifth oldest of the ten children.
